Adopt-A-Sloth
Program
The
Adopt-A-Sloth program was established to help support our growing family of
sloths and to help promote research, educational and conservation efforts that
constitute our mission. Why should you consider adopting a sloth? Because it
is a win/win situation for all involved. You have the opportunity to become a
part of the wonderful world of the sloth. You will learn about the two
species of sloth found in Costa
Rica and you will learn the story of your
own “adopted” sloth.
Best
of all, you will have the satisfaction of helping one of the rain forest’s
most lovable and misunderstood inhabitants. In return, your gift enables us
to support our ever-growing population of sloths and pursue the rescue,
rehabilitation and research that is needed to understand and correct the
problems faced by sloths and their rain forest home because of human
intervention. We believe that sloths are amazing creatures and that they
sometimes need and deserve our help. The Adopt-A-Sloth program is one way
that you can make a difference. In addition to our Adopt-A-Sloth program,
there are other ways to help. Donations of money and/or needed equipment are
deeply appreciated. Please contact us in advance if you would like to
contribute supplies and/or equipment and we can provide you with a current
list. If you would like to adopt a sloth or make a contribution, please click
on this link and provide the information requested.
How will the money you contribute be spent?
Care
for orphaned and/or injured animals: This includes providing appropriate,
sanitary, environmentally stimulating housing; catering to the special
dietary needs of both species of sloth, from infancy to geriatric food needs;
provide medical evaluation and treatment to injured or sick animals by
veterinarians in our on-site clinic/hospital.
Research:
Although Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary leads the world
in sloth research, we still have only a basic knowledge of sloth anatomy and
physiology. More study is needed in order to improve the quality of care
given to each animal and to develop a safe and effective protocol for
returning hand-reared sloths to the wild. The best way to do this is to
monitor wild sloths in their habitat in order to record habits, food
preferences, home range parameters, and much more. Additional staff and
costly, modern scientific equipment (such as collars with GPS systems) are
required.
Education/conservation:
No conservation effort can succeed without the understanding and support of
local people, beginning with our youngest citizens. In an effort to educate
communities in the area surrounding the Sanctuary and throughout Costa Rica,
we have developed an environmental education program for local schools. The
main objective of this initiative is to encourage youngsters, our future
leaders, to take an active role in the protection of our rain forest and its
inhabitants.
